ANGEL LOPEZ IS MURDERED. TRANSGENDER WOMEN AND NON-TRANSGENDER WOMEN UNITE! WE DEMAND THE RIGHT TO PROTECT OURSELVES!
Event: SWAC responds to the murder of Angel Lopez at Transgender Nation Candlelight Vigil. Contact: Carol Leigh (510) 522-1211 Time & Date: Monday, September 13, 1993 8PM Location: Ellis and Gough Angel Lopez was murdered last week. Her body was found on Ellis, near Gough Street on September 1st, early morning. Police suggested that her murderer could have been a lover or someone posing as a client. Vulnerable communities of women are targeted with violence from everyone, beginning with parents, to peers and lovers, to legislators and cops. We are considered expendable. We are not expendable. We demand our right to survive. Transgender women and non-transgender women unite! SWAC calls for broad based community support of transgender people and communities, and an adequate police response to this murder. 1) The S.F. Police department should declare a moratorium on arrests of women on the street in this area until they find the murderer. 2) The S.F. Police Department should assist the transgender community in informing other women in the area. 3) SWAC calls for a diversion of police resources from the arrest of women of the street, to the protection of victims of violence on the street. We demand the right to communicate with each other for support. We demand the right to work together to protect each other. Shelters and services: Prior to her murder, Angel Lopez called to report an incident of domestic violence. As a transgender woman, Angel Lopez was excluded from battered women's shelters. Insist on transgender inclusion in shelters, programs and services. |
